Description Social studies educators have traditionally and conservatively focused on civic competencies in curriculum standards and pedagogy. With a broader view that explores beyond a list of proposed civic competencies, we define being what it means to be engaged as a citizen, a concept that must include addressing the inequities that are the byproduct of endemic racism.
